Mumbai police to file charge sheet against Headley

He did a recce of targets in Mumbai for more than two years prior to 26/11 attack

Mumbai/Washington: David Headley, the terror suspect arrested by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation, will soon be charged separately by the Mumbai police for allegedly conducting reconnaissance of targets hit by Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists in November last year.

The decision comes after the FBI gave in a Chicago court details of the reconnaissance missions carried out by the American national at the behest of the Lashkar.

Official sources said the Indian investigators had enough proof of Headley, who is of Pakistani origin, conducting surveillance of targets in Mumbai for more than two years preceding the November 26, 2008 attack and all evidence of his involvement would be incorporated in the supplementary charge sheet.

Interrogation access

However, the additional charge sheet would be filed only after Indian investigators get access to interrogate Headley.

During his multiple visit to India, Headley is accused of taking pictures and making videotapes of various places, including those targeted by the Lashkar terrorists.

After each trip Headley undertook to India between September 2006 and July 2008, he is believed to have returned to Pakistan, met other co-conspirators and provided them with photographs, videos and oral descriptions of various locations.

Important day: Obama

U.S. President Barack Obama believes that the indictment of Headley is an “important day” in efforts at protecting American people.

“Obviously, I continue to say, and the President does, too, that we have taken and will continue to take every step necessary to protect the American people. Today was an important day in doing that,” White House spokesman Robert Gibbs told journalists in Washington. — PTI
