No impact of bandh in town

Indira Gandhi’s statue vandalised in Borigaon village

ADILABAD: Though the day was marked by widespread protests by pro-Telangana employees organisations and trade unions in Adilabad district, there was only one incident of vandalism. Unknown persons damaged the statue of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi at Borigaon village in Sarangapur mandal sometime in the dead of the night.

There was hardly any impact of the bandh on Tuesday, a call which was given by Maoists to protest the encounter deaths of two of their colleagues. The Communist Party of India (Maoist) alleged that police killed Chippakurthy Ravi and Yellam Tirupati district committee members of Adilabad and Warangal respectively in a false encounter on December 2.

Dharnas, rallies and ‘rasta rokos’ were held at different places in the district. Protesting groups like the beedi workers union at Nirmal and the District Medical and Health employees at Adilabad danced and sang Bathukamma songs to mock the celebrations.

Police arrested 11 persons at Kadem for burning an effigy of Chief Minister K. Rosaiah. At Ramakrishnapur, protesters burnt an effigy of Health Minister Danam Nagender. A rail roko was staged for a brief period by TRS activists at Bellampally.
