THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Students of the Government Upper Primary School, Chalai, will herald New Year gazing the moon. They will mark the eve watching the much-awaited lunar eclipse through the school’s newly-erected reflective telescope. The event, a part of a series of programmes charted out by the school in connection with the International Year of Astronomy, will also invite parents and members of the local public to view the celestial spectacle. The telescope was set up under the space science study centre of the school last week at a cost of Rs.70,000. The unit installed in association with the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan will enable the students to observe the craters on earth’s natural satellite at close quarters apart from taking a peek at some of the distant planetary objects and constellations. A formal inauguration of the unit will take place at the school on Wednesday. “We hope the study centre will guide the students in pursuing space studies in the future,” said Amul Roy, a teacher at the school. In addition to the 375 students of the school, the services of the study centre and the telescope will also be made available to the students and teachers of neighbouring schools. Around 70 selected teachers from 69 schools will receive training in astronomy at the school.
