Bangalore: The ‘International Anti-Corruption Day’ was observed in a unique way in front of Mahatma Gandhi statue here on Wednesday. About 100 volunteers from several non-governmental organisations (NGOs), under the banner of `Coalition Against Corruption’ (CAC), distributed publicity material against corruption to about 2,000 persons and requested them to pressure the State Government to tackle corruption. The volunteers said corruption was getting out of control in government departments. Empowering the Lokayukta and other agencies was crucial to curb this. The people should resist the demand for money from government servants. They should approach the Lokayukta. High level committees on anti-corruption should be formed in district and taluk levels across the State, the protesters said. The Lokayukta N. Santosh Hegde attended the programme and extended his support to the campaign. In his message, Mr. Hegde said: “Every person should take certain steps against corruption.” In order to raise awareness about corruption, the United Nation’s General Assembly, on October 3, 2003, has designated December 9 as ‘International Anti-Corruption Day’. A walk is being organised by the Loksatta on December 13 in support of the demand for more powers to Lokayukta. The walk will start from the Lokayukta office in M.S. Building and will proceed to Mahatma Gandhi Statue via Cubbon Park. “We are determined to launch an all-out campaign to empower the Lokayukta, which seems to be the sole recourse for deliverance from the criminal elements,” Loksatta Party president K. Ramalakshmi said here on Wednesday. Details can be had from party activist Deepak C.N. on phone 9449559451. Citizens can support the cause by signing the online petition at empowerlokayukta.org.
