Green cause: Agriculturist Subash Palekar lights the lamp to inaugurate the Swadeshi Science Congress at Kerala Agricultural University in Thrissur on Thursday. Thrissur: The 19th Swadeshi Science Congress held at the Kerala Agricultural University’s College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences on Thursday called upon agriculturists to promote organic farming. Inaugurating the congress, agriculturist and promoter of Zero Budget Natural Farming Subash Palekar said that inorganic farming harmed soil by destroying the microbial population. “Microbial destruction prevents formation of humus. Multi-species cultivation and indigenous livestock for sustainable agriculture are ideal for the country,” he said. KAU Vice-Chancellor K. R. Viswambharan stressed the role of NGOs in taking science and technology to the masses. He emphasised the need for creating awareness about changing climatic conditions and their impact on food production. K. I. Vasu, founder president and patron of the Swadeshi Science Movement, said that modern society should harness the best of modern and ancient sciences. Mr. Palekar released a journal containing 105 research papers. V. P. N. Nampoori, Director of the International School of Photonics in the Cochin University of Science and Technology delivered the J. C. Bose and C. V. Raman Memorial Lecture. KAU Director of Research D. Alexander; Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Dean E. Nanu; Swadeshi Science Movement president M. K. Mukundan; N. G. K. Pillai; and KAU Public Relations Officer T. S. Rajeev also spoke.
