MOMENT OF EUPHORIA: Winners of the Online IQ Contest with Valingro Chairman Ar.Rm. Arun (sitting on right) and Cognizant Director Balaji Uppili at a function held in National Public School, Chennai, on Thursday. CHENNAI: If academics play a key role in providing a good career launch-pad for students, inculcating moral values would ensure holistic growth and keep them going during tough times, speakers observed at a function here on Thursday. Addressing the prize distribution function of the Online IQ Contest conducted for member schools of The Hindu Newspaper in Education (NIE) programme, the speakers said the students should imbibe culture, tradition and moral values. Distributing the prizes, Valingro Group Chairman, Ar. Rm. Arun, said a deeper understanding of subjects was crucial for getting technical jobs. “Rote learning would not lead you anywhere. Understanding what you learn will help you in your career,” he said. Students must not look for short-term ways to fetch a job but pursue their higher studies that would shape their career better. Extra-curricular activities give students a clear edge over others and strengthen their mental fortitude. Culture, he observed, was getting diluted by growing exposure of Western world through media. “Values of our ancestral tradition must be respected. They hold a lot of significance and help us evolve as better individuals.” More opportunitiesCognizant Director, Balaji Uppili, noted that students now have innumerable opportunities to learn from media. “They [media] make you learn newer things every day and help you package yourself better. You only have to be ready to learn the best from them,” he said. The contest, conducted in partnership with Everonn’s Toppers Tutorials, saw a participation of over 5,000 students from 200 schools from Chennai. It was conducted in three categories – classes VI to VIII, classes IX and X, and classes XI and XII. V. Lavanya from class VII of D.A.V Girls Senior Secondary School, Gopalapuram, Akashara Venkatesan, class IX student of National Public School, and V.R. Jayasruthi, a class XI student of Vidyodaya Matriculation Higher Secondary Academy, were the first-prize winners in their respective categories.
