KOCHI: The State government has approved plans to set up a floor tile factory using bamboo. The unit, coming up with Chinese technology, is being established in Kozhikode, said the Minister for Industries Elamaram Karim here on Thursday. The Minister was inaugurating Kerala Bamboo Festival-2009 here at the Ernakulam Town Hall. The Minister said that the idea for setting up the floor tile factory stemmed from a visit by a delegation from the Kerala State Bamboo Corporation to China recently. He said that China was far ahead of other countries, including India, in the utilization of bamboo and called on the bamboo-based industries to adopt new technology and to seek inspiration from the new developments in the field. The Minister said that the industrial scene was filled with hope, the listed companies having recorded a massive 118 per cent growth during the first half of the current financial year compared to the same period last year. Substantial improvement in performance has been recorded by the public sector undertakings too, he said. The State government has been committed to improving the marketing of products from Kerala. For the first time, the State Industries Department is also organizing a textile fair in Kannur this year. This will be an annual feature in the coming years along with Bamboo Fest. Earlier, the Bamboo Festival had a musical start with the release of a compact disc of music from bamboo instruments, including flute and a bamboo xylophone. The inaugural function opened with a prayer on the flute. Prof. Mercy Williams, Mayor of the Corporation of Kochi, presided at the function. Dominic Presentation, MLA, delivered the keynote address. Kamesh Salam, Director of the Cane and Bamboo Technology Centre, Assam and President of World Bamboo Congress offered felicitations. T. O. Sooraj, Director of Industries and Commerce, welcomed the gathering. K. A. Chackochan, chairman of the Kerala State Bamboo Corporation; T. Balakrishnan, Principal Secretary, Industries and Commerce and Sudhir Kumar Panda, Advisor, NMBA were among those present at the inaugural function. The Bamboo Festival is on till Sunday.
