A view of St. Mary’s Island in Udupi district. Udupi: The Malpe Development Committee (MDC) is taking many new steps for the development of the Malpe beach and St. Mary’s Island in Udupi district. Member-secretary of the committee Gokuldas Nayak told The Hindu on Saturday that since a large number of tourists visited Malpe beach in their vehicles, new parking arrangements were being created. A spot for parking bigger vehicles and two-wheelers was being developed in a one-acre plot of land behind Paradise Isle Hotel on the beach. A parking space for four-wheelers including cars would come up on the southern side. The Gandhi statue at the beach would be given a facelift. A minimum of 20 benches would be put up there while a pavement would be provided on the northern side. Two self-help groups (SHGs) had been appointed to maintain cleanliness on the beach. St. Mary’s IslandMr. Nayak said that a pebbled pathway would be laid on St. Mary’s Island, connecting various places there. Signboards informing people of dangerous areas that they should avoid would be installed. The Tourism Department had sanctioned Rs. 76 lakh each for the development of the beach and the island, of which Rs. 22 lakh had been released for beach development and Rs. 5 lakh for that of the island, he added.
