SB-CID being revamped
Staff Reporter
Coimbatore: Special Branch CID units, otherwise known as Detachments, across Tamil Nadu are coming under Zonal DSPs. These units were hitherto led by Inspectors of Police in cities and districts and were reporting directly to the Intelligence Wing of the State Police Headquarters in Chennai. In the 1990s, the SB-CID units (detachment units) functioned under Deputy Superintendents of Police. The system was withdrawn and Inspectors were posted as unit heads.
In a move to revamp the administration of the Intelligence Wing and to fine-tune the channel for flow of information, the State police machinery has chosen to have four Zonal Deputy Superintendents of Police to whom the district unit Inspectors would report henceforth.
The Police Chief Office recently issued orders bringing the units under the command of a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in every zone. The West Zone DSP for SB-CID would be in charge of the detachment units functioning in the Nilgiris, Coimbatore Rural District, Coimbatore City, Tirupur, Erode, Namakkal, Salem City, Salem Rural District, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri. B. Sakthivel, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Crime Branch CID, Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been appointed DSP for West Zone SB-CID. Similarly, Zonal DSPs are being appointed for the South, Central and North Zone SB-CID Detachment units.
