136 MLAs from Andhra and Rayalaseema and three from Telangana region have resigned Speaker to first verify signatures and check whether resignation letter is in prescribed format HYDERABAD: Assembly Speaker N. Kiran Kumar Reddy will invite individually all the 139 legislators, who have tendered their resignation in the developments that followed the Centre’s decision on formation of Telangana, after his consultations with the Advocate General on Monday. “Once I seek the legal opinion of the Advocate General on Monday, I plan to invite each MLA and discuss the resignation letters submitted to me,” Mr. Reddy said here on Sunday. So far, 136 legislators from Andhra and Rayalaseema and three from Telangana have tendered their resignation letters to the Speaker after Centre’s announcement on Telangana. Mr. Kiran Kumar Reddy told The Hindu that during his interaction with each legislator, he would first verify the signature and check whether the letter is in prescribed format. “I will also seek their opinion on the issue before proceeding further,” he said. Asked if there was any move to adjourn the Assembly sine die in view of the crisis in the House, the Speaker said no such decision has been taken. “As the Speaker, I can adjourn the House sine die for a week without any consultations if there are disturbances. If it is beyond a week, the Chief Minister has to introduce a resolution in the House,” he explained. To send reportIt is understood that the State government is likely to send a formal report to the Centre about the situation arising out of the resignation by a majority legislators from Andhra and Rayalaseema regions. The government is likely to seek the Centre’s advice on how to overcome the situation which is hardly conducive for introduction of a resolution in the Assembly on the formation of Telangana. Sources in the Legislature Secretariat said the issuance of a whip was not mandatory if the government wanted to introduce a resolution in the Assembly on any subject. It was pointed out that when the legislators, who had tendered their resignation defying the parties’ diktat, it was unlikely that a resolution on Telangana would be moved in the near future. “It should be realised that they are all voters and the resolution may be defeated also,” sources observed.
