SALEM: A team of officials from the Salem Corporation and Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment (HR and CE) department removed a number of shops encroached on government land here on Monday. The shops were located near the Corporation’s main office. A few of them had even constructed houses on the land, which belonged to the HR and CE department. Officials had issued warnings on several occasions to vacate the land. But the persons had failed to follow the instructions. Earth movers were used to demolish the concrete structures. Officials said that the Corporation had asked the HR and CE department to provide land for widening a road in the area. Steps would be taken to prevent the persons from encroaching the land in the future, officials added.
