Udupi
Udupi: The Deputy Director of Public Instruction (DDPI), B.V. Mahidas, has said that present-day education lays emphasis on making learning fun and enjoyable for students. He was speaking at the inaugural function of the “Chinnara Harshotsava” here on Monday. The “Chinnara Harshotsava” is a three-day children’s fest-cum-competition, in which students from schools under the midday meal scheme of the Sri Krishna Math/Temple, present cultural programmes. Dr. Mahidas said that about five decades ago, it was thought that punishment was an essential part of teaching. But this had changed. Now, it was incumbent upon teachers to teach subjects by creating an interest in it among students. “Learning has to be made a meaningful and enjoyable experience,” he said. Students who enjoyed learning their subjects would naturally develop interest in them. Dance and cultural programmes could also be used as teaching tools, he said. Lakshminarayana Samaga, former Principal of the MGM College, Malpe, welcomed the gathering. Sugunendra Tirtha Swami of the Puttige Math and president of the Yuva Brahmana Parishat Ranjan Kalkura were present. In-charge of the Sri Krishna Math’s midday meal scheme Srinivasa Rao said that nearly 1,200 students from 20 schools were participating in the “Chinnara Harshotsava” on Monday. Nearly 1,500 students from 25 schools would be participating in the fest on Tuesday, while 1,800 students from 26 schools would be participating in the programme on Wednesday. Nearly 22,000 students from 110 schools in Udupi district came under the Sri Krishna Math’s midday meal scheme called “Chinnara Santharpane”, he added.
