Bank employees stage demonstration

Tuticorin: The members of All India Bank Employees’ and Officers’ Association abstained from work on a nation wide call for a one-day strike on Wednesday and staged a demonstration in front of the Canara Bank on Beach Road pressing for their demands to be fulfilled.

The agitating members demanded for setting up new branches of nationalised banks and recruitment of staff. They also stood firm in opposing the merger activities of banks. M. Abdul Qadir, President, Tuticorin Town Bank Employees’ Association led the demonstration. R. Krishnamurthy, General Secretary was present. Thirty members including seven women took part.

The employees of various bank unions staged a demonstration in front of the Federal Bank in Nagercoil on Wednesday to press for their multi-point charter of demands.

However the banking operations were not affected in few parts of the district. Only 400 employees participated the strike. A thin attendance was recorded in State Bank of Travancore, Syndicate Bank and Central Bank of India.

The banking operations in State Bank of India, Indian Overseas Bank, South Indian Bank, Bank of Baroda, Bank of India took place as usual. The agitation was led by the president of district bank employees’ association, Ragunathan.

The strike call given by a few associations of banks evoked a mixed response in the district on Wednesday.

A section of employees of Indian Bank, Canara Bank, Punjab National Bank and Union Bank of India participated in it. Though it affected a few operations of the banks, basic functions remained unaffected. Customers visited banks as usual.

The operation of other banks including State Bank of India was not affected at all. About 50 percent of employees took part in the strike in Sivaganga district.
