Educational institutions asked to adhere to MV Act rules

Collector warns of cancellation of permit of vehicles flouting rules

KRISHNAGIRI: Managements of the private schools and colleges were asked to adhere to the rules laid down in the Motor Vehicles Act, failing which stringent actions would initiated on the erring institution, Collector V.K. Shanmugam said here on Wednesday.

He was addressing a meeting convened at the collectorate to apprise the correspondents/managers of the educational institutions on the rules and regulations to be followed while operating motor vehicles for transporting the children.

Rash driving

Mr. Shanmugam said stringent action includes cancellation of permit of the vehicle. He also warned that the over speeding and rash driving of buses, vans and mini buses of educational institutions and autos carrying children would attract punitive action including cancellation of driving license.

Mr. Shanmugam instructed the transport officials to review the permits also and cancel them if there is any violations.

He also instructed the managements of the educational institutions that the buses carrying school children must have ‘Educational Institution Vehicle’ written prominently in the front and back of the vehicle and if it is a hired one, ‘On school duty.’

Buses belonging to educational institutions should not carry children in excess of the permitted seating capacity.

The vehicles must have a first aid box and fire extinguisher.

Windows should be fitted with horizontal grills.

School name and telephone number must be written on the bus.

Doors must be fitted with reliable locks.

Bus drivers must have had minimum ten years experience in driving heavy vehicles and must not have committed traffic offences.

In addition to the driver, another qualified person must be in the school bus.

The meeting was attended by P. Suresh, Regional Transport Officer, Hosur, M. Baskaran, Chief Education Officer, P. Narayanan, Personal Assistant to Collector (General), A. Anbarsu, Revenue Divisional Officer, Krishnagiri, Mahendran, Divisional Manager, TNSTC, Correspondents of the educational institutions and Tahsildhars.
