Road works: court seeks details of proposed action

Kochi: A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Wednesday directed the Additional Secretary, Public Works Department, chief engineers of the National Highway Authority and the Roads and Bridges, PWD, to file additional affidavits indicating the action they proposed to take to permanently solve the issue of poor maintenance of roads in the State.

The Bench comprising Chief Justice S.R. Bannurmath and Justice A.K. Basheer issued the directive as it was dissatisfied with the affidavits filed by the respondents in the case relating to the bad condition of roads in Kannur. The public interest petition was filed by V.R. Nazar.

It was pointed out in the affidavits that the land acquisition process was holding up the development of the National Highways.

Order challenged

The government order cancelling the lease agreement of the Thiruvananthapuram Golf Club and directing to initiate steps to evict the secretary of the Club from the Golf Club land within a month was challenged before the Kerala High Court.

The petition was filed by its secretary Raghuchandran Nair. According to him, the order was arbitrary. A Division Bench while disposing of the club’s petition earlier had observed that “fair and reasonable time” should be given before eviction. It had also held that evictions should be ordered as per law and terms of the lease agreement.
