It is an EU-Manipal University initiative Rs. 2 crore will be granted for the facility Manipal: The Manipal Centre for European Studies (MCES), a joint initiative of the European Union (EU) and the Manipal University, will be inaugurated here on Thursday. Registrar (International Programmes) of the university H. Vinod Bhat told presspersons here on Tuesday said the European Union had been funding the establishment of European study centres in India and contemporary Indian study centres in the EU. It had, for the first time, selected a private university (Manipal University) for setting up the study centre, he said. A delegation of the European Union to India, Bhutan and Nepal was granting € 299,000 (Rs. 2 crore), which was around 80 per cent of the total cost, for the initiative, Mr. Bhat said. The grant was for two years. The objective of the MCES was to develop and broaden India-EU relations by sharing each others’ strengths with the help of educational enterprise and to foster institutional partnerships between universities, he said. The existing partnership with Hochschule Bremen — University of Applied Sciences, Germany, was extended to include programmes suggested in the MCES. The MCES would offer three programmes and have two sub-centres as a part of this initiative, Mr. Bhat said. The three programmes are: Masters in European Studies and Management, Postgraduate Diploma in Gandhian and Peace Studies, and Certificate courses in Public Health. The two sub-centres are: Manipal Multidisciplinary Developmental Research Centre and the Dwaita Philosophy Resource Centre. Registrar of the university G.K. Prabhu and head of the MCES Neeta Inamdar were present.
