5 die in accident near Karur

KARUR: Five persons were killed and nine others injured in a road accident at Tadakoil on the Karur-Dindigul National Highway 7 near here early on Wednesday.

Police said that a State Express Transport Corporation bus running from Salem to Rameswaram was parked on the roadside near Valluvar Nagar, Tadakoil, after it broke down.

The conductor was helping the passengers board other buses when a sand-laden lorry on its way from Thottaim to Pallapatti rammed the bus, dragging it several feet.

While four persons were killed on the spot, another person died on way to hospital.

The dead were K. Thangaraj (48) of Kunjandiyur, Mettur, Salem district; A. Balakrishnan (30) of Valayapatti, Namakkal district; J. Moorthy (29) of Nethimedu, Salem; K. Asif Sultan (40) of Thirupullani, Ramanathapuram district; and A. Thangaraj (61) of Thondikkadu, Namakkal district.

The injured are being treated in private hospitals at Karur.

Police have arrested lorry driver Kalimuthu (40), who is also among the injured.

Aravakurichi DSP Baskaran, who happened to be on his rounds in the vicinity at the time of the accident, arranged for relief and rescue of victims.
