‘Sonia for consensus on Telangana’

AICC president disappointed over political crisis in State, says Lok Satta Party chief

LSP president Jayaprakash Narayan meets AICC president Sonia Gandhi

Sonia ready to do whatever possible to diffuse the situation, says JP

HYDERABAD: All India Congress Committee (AICC)president Sonia Gandhi is genuinely concerned over the political crisis in Andhra Pradesh and wants the Union government to defuse the situation through a consensus that will be to the satisfaction of people of all regions, says Lok Satta Party president Jayaprakash Narayan. Dr. Jayaprakash, who met the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday to discuss the situation in the State, called on Ms. Gandhi on Thursday.

Speaking to this correspondent from New Delhi, Dr. Jayaprakash said Ms. Gandhi was deeply disappointed with the way major political parties backtracked on their earlier stance of Telangana after giving an impression of unanimity on the issue. But Ms. Gandhi said she would do whatever possible to diffuse the situation and build a consensus. She said that the government should also facilitate consensus-building by taking into account the aspirations of people of all regions.

Dr. Jayaprakash told the UPA chairperson that though the Union government had expressed its intent under certain circumstances, it could not be imposed in a democratic set-up.

While working on building a consensus on the issue with all the stakeholders, steps should be taken to improve the political climate in the State.

Concrete action

The Centre could give confidence to people of all backward regions through concrete action like constituting regional boards, empowering district councils comprising legislators and announcing special packages for development of backward areas in all regions in the State.

With goodwill and mutual trust any difficult situation could be resolved, he told Ms. Gandhi.
