Consensual approach to marine fisheries Bill

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Thursday expressed happiness over the Centre’s move to follow a consensual approach to the Marine Fisheries (Regulation and Management) Bill.
In a letter to Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, the Chief Minister stated that he was “extremely happy” to note that the Centre would hold detailed consultations with all concerned before finalising the legislation.
He referred to a discussion between Union Textiles Minister Dayanidhi Maran and Mr. Pawar on the issue.
He thanked Mr. Pawar for having decided not to introduce the legislation in the current session of Parliament in response to his request, and the Centre for taking “a good and timely decision,” taking into account the problems of fishermen in the country.
Mr. Karunanidhi recalled his letter to Mr. Pawar last month, in which he had conveyed the apprehensions and concerns of the Tamil Nadu fishermen about certain adverse clauses in the draft Bill.
