Advantages of TDR as compensation stressed

MYSORE: The Mysore City Corporation (MCC) on Thursday organised a workshop on Transfer of Development Rights (TDR), which is being mooted as a new strategic development tool for land acquisition and transfer.

MCC Commissioner K.S. Raykar said the concept had been tried successfully in other States, and stressed the imperatives of adopting TDR as a tool in view of the growing scarcity of land for development. He said the MCC and other agencies were encountering problems and challenges pertaining to land, and cash compensation was inadequate for those giving up the land. The local authorities could not even pay the prevailing rate in compensation, he added. Hence, TDR would be used by the MCC to develop civic amenities such as roads, parks, playgrounds and commercial complexes, free of cost, in lieu of which the owner of the land would get certain rights instead of monetary compensation. Elected representatives from the MCC, Tanvir Sait, MLA, revenue officials, representatives from the Builders’ Association of India were present.
