Playing new roles

Directors Balachander and Bharathiraja in the film Rettachuzhi.

CHENNAI: The start of next year would see the coming together of two veteran directors of Tamil film industry playing key roles in a film.

Rettachuzhi, directed by Thamira, will feature the director-duo as senior citizens handling a bunch of children. “The film will be a nostalgic journey for elders and an entertaining expedition for kids. The storyline revolves around the concept of elderly innocence and premature acts of kids,” says Mr. Thamira. Produced by S. Pictures of Shankar, the film is shot in a town panchayat and talks about families and lives of two senior citizens who face amusing challenges from 22 children. “Humour is part of our lives. We all see people throwing casual comments that turn out to be contextually hilarious. That is the kind of characters I have introduced in my film. It will be a compilation of interesting instances in everyone’s life,” says the director, who had worked with Mr.Balachander for eight years. He had been the dialogue writer for Mr.Balachander’s film Poi.

When the script was ready, the hunt for search of two senior citizens began. And that was when the director decided to cast Mr.Balachander and Mr.Bharathiraja, who have not made appearances on screen but are popular faces among audience.

The two director-doyens gave a nod to the project after a lot of deliberation. “In fact, both turned me down when I first approached. I drew a sketch of their character and pictorially explained how I would portray them. Both were impressed and agreed to make appearances, which makes the film more interesting.”

With the dubbing sessions in progress, Mr.Thamira retraces his year-long film experience, terming it “the best learning platform.” Aryan makes his debut as the hero in the film, pairing up with Anjali.
