Canadian Red Cross to support IRCS State branch

Special Correspondent

Hyderabad: The Canadian Red Cross has come forward to support the disaster management project of the Indian Red Cross Society, A.P branch, after the latter’s partnership with the American Red Cross (ARC) closes this month end.

The modalities and quantum of funding is to be finalised, said Justice A. Lakshmana Rao, former CJ and honorary secretary of IRCS, State branch.

Speaking to presspersons after the project handing over ceremony here on Thursday, he said that association with the American Red Cross was beneficial in capacity building of the State and district branches. The ARC had funded Rs. 45 lakh for the project which was based on a scientific and methodical approach to disaster management.

Standard operation procedures were laid down and the volunteers had learnt preparation of flow chart, situation report and data-based management, Justice Rao said.

He said 120 volunteers were trained at State level and more than a thousand at district and village levels. The training received was put to use during the recent floods. The volunteers had used the ham radios for rescue and relief. “Now we have to sustain on our own and consolidate whatever we have learnt,” he said. Ramsey Rayyis, field representative, ARC, said it was proposed to undertake similar disaster management programme in Gujarat.
