YSR loyalists jump on to Telangana bandwagon

Chidambaram’s statement on Telangana has turned them into pro-statehood activists

YSR loyalists are now spearheading struggles in their native districts

Three Medak Ministers, all YSR loyalists, rally behind Telangana forces

HYDERABAD: With the threat of losing out to their political rivals in their respective districts looming large, several key followers of Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy have jumped on to the Telangana bandwagon.

Call it political compulsion or pressure from their constituents, one-time integrationists opposed to the separate Telangana movement launched by TRS chief K. Chandrasekhar Rao are now chanting the Jai Telangana slogan. The statement made by Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram on statehood for Telangana on December 9 has turned them into pro-statehood activists.

Leading struggles

YSR loyalists, who did not miss out an opportunity to project Kadapa MP Y. S. Jaganmohan Reddy as the Chief Ministerial candidate, are now spearheading struggles in their native districts to counter the agitation launched by their counterparts in Andhra and Rayalaseema districts.

In Warangal, former Minister Konda Surekha is spearheading the movement to match the struggles launched by her rivals Major Irrigation Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah and Bhupalpalli MLA Gandra Venkata Ramana Reddy.

In Karimnagar, YSR aide, former Minister T. Jeevan Reddy, a known critic of KCR, is vocally criticising Congress leaders from the other regions for their efforts to derail the statehood stir. Convener of AP Congress MPs Forum Ponnam Prabhakar did not hesitate to criticise Mr. Jagan for joining hands with Telugu Desam MPs in support of integration.

Changing equations

In a bid to steal the thunder from their rivals, even a diehard YSR loyalist like Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy hosted a meeting of all the Telangana Ministers, MPs and legislators in the city on Sunday last.

Sources said he did not want to be seen as lagging behind after the pro-active role taken by ex-Ministers K. Jana Reddy and R. Damodar Reddy.

In Medak, Ministers J. Geetha Reddy, C. Damodar Raj Narasimha and V. Sunitha Laxma Reddy, all believed to be close to the late Chief Minister, are rallying behind the Telangana forces.

Mahabubnagar Minister D. K. Aruna surprised the YSR camp by her vociferous support to Telangana, while Home Minister P. Sabitha Indra Reddy too took a pro-Telangana stand.

“We have to protect our identity and also fight our rivals in the districts,” some of them are reported to have remarked to leaders in the YSR camp.
