Special Correspondent
MADURAI: The police arrested four persons, all from a village in West Bengal, and seized fake currency to the tune of Rs.2.50 lakh here on Thursday.
Following a complaint from a shopkeeper that a youth had purchased a wrist watch and paid Rs.500, which appeared to be fake, the Thideer Nagar police had registered a case.
The police said Raju Sheik (20), during interrogation, had admitted to being in possession of fake currency in the denomination of Rs.500 to the tune of Rs.55,000. He had arrived here by the Howrah Express on December 12 with three others. After securing his accomplices, the police seized Rs.1.95 lakh.
A senior police officer said they were probing from where the gang had obtained the currency.
