MADURAI: Mosquito bites are common. But no one would have guessed how much blood is lost by people to its bites. In Madurai alone, approximately 100 litres of human blood is sucked every day by the huge mosquito population, according to a study done over a two-year period during 2007-09. Data on mosquito bites was shared at a conference here on Friday by medical entomologist R. Selvaraj Pandian who, along with the Centre for Research in Medical Entomology, carried out a study in Madurai. “Ten years back, we were losing about 50 litres per day to mosquitoes. Now, it has doubled, as the mosquito bites have increased,” he said. A team led by Dr. Pandian, a retired professor in the postgraduate and research department of zoology, American College, carried out a laboratory study on mosquito bites.
