Joyous time: Assam team members are a jubilant lot after its win over Andhra Pradesh in the Ranji Trophy Plate Group semifinal.

GUWAHATI: Andhra’s valiant bid to make a match of the semifinals against Assam failed to bear fruit as the host coasted to a five-wicket victory to make to the Super League next year and also qualified to play the knockout as one of the plate division sides.

Assam has drawn to play Uttar Pradesh, which finished second in group ‘B’ of the Super League, in the knockout round to be played at Guwahati from December 24.

Resuming at overnight 153 for five, Andhra added 88 runs this morning before being dismissed by Assam. This left Assam a victory target of 129 which it achieved losing five wickets in 39. 1 overs.

It was once again Dheeraj Jadhav who anchored the innings with an unbeaten 49. Small but useful contributions from Parvez Aziz (25), Kunal Saikia (24) helped the side immensely.

In fact, Andhra had the host by the neck by claiming four wickets for 67 but Saikia came in and used the long handle to gather a quick 24 off 20 balls with two fours and two sixes turned the match around.

With an experienced Sairaj Bahutule putting up a dogged defence, Jadhav ensured the host had no further problems.
