Bhutan’s commitment to climate change unconditional
Indrani Dutta
Kolkata: Amid the ongoing tussle at the United Nations’ climate change talks at Copenhagen, Bhutan, a country known for protecting its environment zealously said that it would be a carbon-neutral country with or without any outside help.
Talking to the media after participating in an interactive session organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce here on Friday, Bhutan Foreign Minister Ugyen Tshering said: “Bhutan’s position is very clear on climate change issues and it has decided to be a carbon-neutral country.” Responding to a mention by reporters of the U.S. offer on joining a $ 100 billion fund to vulnerable developing countries made at Copenhagen, the Minister indicated that his country will remain committed to protecting environment with or without funding. “We have made an unconditional declaration on this and we will undertake this (carbon neutrality) without exception,” Mr. Tshering said adding that this would be Bhutan’s contribution to the world.
