Sirsi: The Totgars Sale Society (TSS), Sirsi, one of the areca dealing societies in the State, will start purchase of white areca nut (chali) at the minimum support price (MSP) from Monday up to December 31 at Sirsi. The State Government has released Rs. 1 crore for purchase of areca nut of prescribed quality at Rs. 7,500 a quintal, said Shantaram Hegde, president of TSS, Sirsi. He told presspersons here on Saturday that the areca growers should produce the identity card issued to them by either the Horticulture or Revenue department to avail the benefit under the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS). He said that every areca grower was eligible to sell up to five quintals of areca nut under the MIS. The Government has permitted purchase of a maximum of 6,000 tonnes of white areca this season as per the guidelines of the State Government, he added. He hoped that the areca market would be rejuvenated by the scheme. While thanking the Chief Minister for coming to the rescue of areca growers by way of introducing the MIS, he urged the Government to extend the scheme for a few more days after December 31.
