Probe ‘illegal acts’ by weaving societies

Former MLA moves Madras High Court seeking a direction
CHENNAI: A former MLA has moved the Madras High Court seeking a direction to the Assistant Director of Handlooms and Textiles, Erode, to enquire into the “illegal acts” by some weaving societies in Chennimalai Union block in Erode.
In his petition, filed by counsel A.N. Thambidurai, P. Marappan of Kangeyam in Tirupur district said the societies were not functioning properly and indulged in “misappropriation, fraudulent retention of money, breach of trust and corrupt practices.”
They enrolled fictitious members and sold thread to non-members.
The petitioner, an advocate in Erode district, said he had sent representations in September and October this year to authorities seeking an enquiry. No action was taken.
The court has ordered notice returnable in four weeks.
