KOCHI: The provisions in the Marine Fisheries (Regulation and Management) Bill should be scrapped, the Kerala Swatantra Matsyathozhilali Federation and the National Fish Workers Forum have said. Many provisions in it hamper the livelihood of fishermen, federation general secretary P.P. John said while addressing mediapersons at the Ernakulam Press Club on Saturday. The new Bill speaks of how fishermen will have to seek the Centre’s permission to engage in fishing beyond 12 nautical miles off the coast. At present, most fishermen spread their nets 30 to 40 nautical miles off the coast. This contravenes the suggestion in the Murari Committee report that traditional and small-scale fishermen be encouraged to fish in the outer seas, he said.
