NMR restoration as per schedule regardless of hostile terrain: DRM
V.S. Palaniappan
Coimbatore: The pace of restoration of landslip-ravaged the Nilgiris Mountain Railway track was proceeding as per schedule despite the hostile terrain impeding transportation of materials and manpower to the damaged sections, said P.N. Ram, Divisional Railway Manager, Salem Division on Saturday.
Talking to reporters at Singanallur railway station, Mr.Ram said that works in respect of restoration of the track between Udhagamandalam and Coonoor was over by more than 70 per cent.
Services would resume by mid-January 2010. More than 30 per cent of the restoration works were over in respect of the Mettuppalayam–Coonoor section, the worst- hit by rain and landslips. The pace of the work could not be expedited further because of the hostile terrain that lacked an approach road for transporting men and material.
Mr.Ram said that it has been proposed to the headquarters for starting new services: Coimbatore–Bangalore–Coimbatore; Coimbatore–Tirupati– Coimbatore; Coimbatore–Rameswaram–
Coimbatore; Coimbatore–Sengottah and passenger train services between Coimbatore and Erode.
