Troubled times… M.S. Dhoni.

Nagpur: Indian captain M.S. Dhoni was handed a two-match ban for India’s slow over-rate during the second ODI against Sri Lanka at Nagpur.

Dhoni will miss the ODIs at Cuttack and Kolkata, and will return only for the final match in Delhi.

The rest of the Indian players were fined 40 per cent of their match fee for the offence.

Dhoni had been informed of the ban verbally, BCCI vice-president Rajiv Shukla said.

The BCCI was awaiting a formal communication from the ICC.

The second ODI ended about 45 minutes after the scheduled finishing time because of repeated discussions among the Indian players during the closing stages of Sri Lanka’s chase, which prompted match referee Jeff Crowe’s decision to ban the captain.

Sri Lanka was earlier found guilty of the offence during the Twenty20 game at Mohali, when it fell two overs short of its target.

Captain Kumar Sangakkara was fined 40 per cent of his match fee while the rest of the team was fined 20 per cent each.
