MADURAI: The people of southern districts, to be precise, those from Madurai, Theni, Dindigul, Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram should come together and fight against the Kerala government over Mullaperiyar reservoir issue, said Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko here on Sunday. Addressing wayside meetings in suburban pockets of Madurai commencing from Samayanallur, he said that neither the Central Government nor the State government was interested in resolving the serious issue for various reasons. “There is an alarming threat to the people in this region if the problem remains unsolved,” he alleged. Soon, drinking water crisis may surface due to the adamant attitude of the Kerala government. Even, farmers’ survival remained a big question. The sustained threat by Kerala showed that they are not keen to protect the lives of lakhs of people living in this part of Tamil Nadu by sharing water. “The future of thousands of ryots who depended on the water from Mullaiperiyar reservoir for agriculture is bleak,” he pointed out and called for a unified action from all concerned to save the situation. The MDMK leader said that it was the duty of every individual of the State to ensure that Kerala realised the blunder. “We are not against the people of Kerala, but only against some leaders there, he clarified and appealed to the people to join the stir with him on December 29.”
