HYDERABAD: Governor N.D. Tiwari has said the strength of the handloom sector--which accounts for 18 per cent of the country’s cloth production and 15 per cent of fabric exports--lay in its constant endeavour to come up with innovative designs.

Inaugurating the fortnight-long National Handloom Expo-2009 at Nizam College on Sunday he recalled that with an estimated 38 lakh looms employing about 1.3 crore people, the handloom was the second largest rural employment provider only next to agriculture.

Mr. Tiwari also recalled how Mahatma Gandhi had started the Quit India Movement in 1942 only because the British rulers were trying to destroy the handloom sector in the country. Minister for Health and Family Welfare D. Nagender, Secretary, Industries and Commerce, M. Veerabhadraiah were present. Director of Handlooms I.S. Sri Naresh also spoke.

The expo will be on till January 3.
