Seminar to promote Unani medicine in January

Though recognised as alternative medicine, it is not receiving widespread support, feel experts
More than 500 delegates from across the country to take part in it

Hyderabad: A two-day national seminar on ‘Unani Tib’ will be held here on January 16 and 17. Apart from presentation of scientific papers the seminar will focus on promotion of Unani system of medicine. More than 500 delegates from different parts of the country will attend the conference being organised by the All India Unani Tibbi Congress at Gandhi Bhavan auditorium.

Abid Rasool Khan, chairman, Reception Committee, and Ataullah Shareef, chairperson, Seminar Committee, told press persons on Sunday that during the two day session medical camps would be organised and the consultation would be free for the people. Pharmacies like Hamdard from Delhi and Mumbai would be taking part in the deliberations. Medicinal plants and single drugs would also be displayed, Mr. Khan said.

Though the Unani system had proven treatment for many major ailments, it was not receiving the kind of support it should get. The Government of India had sanctioned 12 Unani speciality clinics along with financial assistance in the State, but they were yet to be set up. A Unani clinic sponsored by the Centre at King Koti hospital was awaiting inauguration for the last three years and now the Department of AYUSH was trying to convert it to Ayurveda, Mr. Khan said.

Separate department

Similarly the State government sanctioned Rs. 3.52 core in 2006 for construction of a 120 bedded Unani hospital at Narayanguda in the name of Sir Nizamath Jung, but no action was taken so far. Mr. Khan alleged bias and discriminatory attitude by bureaucrats towards Unani medicine and demanded creation of a separate department for Unani system.
