Grandmother of Challa Raasi, one of the girls who went missing in the hot water canal on Sunday, wails over the tragedy at her home in Khajinagar in Ibrahimpatnam mandal. VIJAYAWADA: Four girls and a woman drowned in the hot water canal of the Narla Tata Rao Thermal Power Station at Ibrahimpatnam on Sunday. The bodies of two girls – Tirumalamudi Veera Kmari (10) and Gunja Prasanthi (13) – were fished out without much delay, while the whereabouts of the remaining three were not known till the end of the day. The incident occurred at Khajimanyam, a colony abutting the canal. The police said that the girls went close to the canal to wash their clothes. Battula Tirupatamma (22), who saw the girls drowning in the canal, went to their rescue and she too was pulled in. She along with Ontipuli Bhoochelli (16) and Challa Raasi (10) were still missing. All the five belong to washermen community. Sirisha, younger sister of Challa Raasi, witnessed the mishap and raised an alarm. Swimmers pressed into service by the police could fish out the two bodies while search was on to trace the remaining three. Local people said de-siltation of the canal done recently increased its depth. The Ibrahimpatnam police registered a case.
