‘Womanist’ walks into town
C.K. Meena
Bangalore: Alice Walker, the prominent U.S. “womanist”, activist and writer best known for her novel The Color Purple for which she won the Pulitzer in 1983, captivated an intimate audience with her eloquence and warmth during a “conversation” organised by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations and the Singamma Sreenivasan Foundation here on Monday.
Dr. Walker, who contributed the word “womanism” to the dictionary and who was at the forefront of the American civil rights movement in the 1960s, shared her thoughts with the largely female gathering of writers, activists and admirers.
It is her first visit to India.
