Doppler weather radar station for Ramnad

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, will soon set up a Doppler weather radar station in Ramanathapuram district on eight acres of government land. Deputy Director General of the RMC Y.E.A. Raj says it will be the third such facility in the State after Chennai and Karaikal.

“The Doppler weather radar will enhance disaster warning capability of the Meteorological department, besides giving forecast for the entire Tamil Nadu coast.”

Continuous weather monitoring and cyclone warning will be possible for a radius of 400 km with the new system. It may also be used to forecast wind pattern for aviation. The Rs.20-crore project will be commissioned in 18 months.
