Financial situation turning from bad to worse, says Rosaiah

Bifurcation of State can only be decided by the Centre

If the revenues fall, development activities will suffer

HYDERABAD: The financial situation of the State is turning from bad to worse because of the agitations by proponents of separate Telangana and later by those favouring a unified Andhra Pradesh, Chief Minister K. Rosaiah said here on Monday.

Emergency meeting

Speaking to media persons after an emergency meeting with available Cabinet Ministers to take stock of situation in the State, Mr. Rosaiah said all leaders and groups from the two regions of the State had given their views and representations to the Central leaders many times. One should bear in mind that Telangana was not the only issue taxing the mind of the Prime Minister, yet the Centre gave priority to it and was seized of the issue. The bifurcation of the State could only be decided by the Centre and it was not in the State’s domain, he said.

Stating that the continued agitations had brought the life in coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema to a standstill and would drastically affect the State government’s revenues, Mr. Rosaiah said the State government, despite slowdown in the economy, had been managing to keep the State afloat financially. But the situation worsened after the agitations broke out in different regions, he regretted.

Appealing to people to help in restoration of normalcy, the Chief Minister said if government revenues would fall, development activities would take a beating and allocations to various sectors, including welfare, would suffer. The protestors were going on a spree of damaging government and private property little realising that money would be raised from public alone to compensate for the loss, he added.
