RS adjourns after condoling member’s demise

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Rajya Sabha was adjourned on Monday following the death of member Suryakantbhai Acharya (BJP), from Gujarat. As soon as the House assembled, Chairman Mohammad Hamid Ansari announced Mr. Acharya’s demise and the members observed a minute’s silence. The House then was adjourned for the day.

Mr. Ansari recalled the work of their former colleague among the weaker sections and tribal people. Mr. Acharya was a lawyer and tax consultant, who hailed from Junagarh. He represented the State in the Rajya Sabha since August 2005.

Monday was the last day of the winter session of the House. It will now meet on Tuesday and the government is likely to make a statement on the recent Climate Change Summit in Copenhagen. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh were present in the House on Monday.

Besides tabling of papers, the business listed for the day included consideration and passage of two bills, including the one to amend the salaries and allowances of Ministers.
