TIRUNELVELI: Manonmaniam Sundaranar University (MSU) will enquire into the evaluation of answer scripts of April 2009 semester examinations, following a large number of candidates getting a pass after revaluation. Of the 5,712 candidates who had applied for revaluation of answer scripts of April 2009 examinations, 3,443, who had failed in the first valuation, obtained the minimum pass mark. A total of 542 got over 20 marks more than what they had obtained in the first valuation. Answering a query raised by Senate member N. Gnanadhas in the 32nd Senate meeting on Monday, Vice-Chancellor R.T. Sabapathy Mohan, who chaired the meeting, assured the members that a committee would look into why so many students, who got a pass through revaluation, failed in the first valuation. “A significant number of candidates, who failed in the first valuation, have passed after revaluation. Teaching community, which has the responsibility of accurately assessing the answer scripts, should not fail in its duty, considering the future of students,” Dr. Sabapathy Mohan noted. Late arrivalSenate member J. Sinthikayal said the late arrival of evaluators to the valuation centres should not be allowed anymore and in fact this issue should viewed very seriously so that it would not lead to callous evaluation of answer scripts. “The Chairman or the Chief Examiners of the valuation board concerned should ascertain the presence of the evaluators at the valuation centre at the right time,” she said. Though some members suggested that the evaluators who failed in their duty of evaluating the answer scripts with utmost precision be barred from being invited for such duties in future, the meeting did not arrive at any consensus on this issue.
