Reintroduce train service to Quilon

Train 6386/6385 Nagore-Tiruchi-Quilon Express/Fast Passenger, running on the metre gauge, was stopped when broad gauge conversion work was undertaken on this stretch. Now that that work is over, the railways must reintroduce this train by extending the 876/871 Nagore - Tiruchi Passenger to Madurai to merge with 785/786 Madurai - Shenkottai Passenger to facilitate a direct train service from Nagore to Shenkottai.

Need for additional train to Bangalore

There is an urgent need to introduce an intercity express between Tiruchi and Bangalore during day time. The only available train to Bangalore from Tiruchi is the 6231/6232 Mayiladuturai-Mysore Express which is always full.

Old people and women find it extremely difficult to get lower berth accommodation in this train, even if they book the tickets well in advance.

Nowadays, there is a huge crowd to Bangalore, more than to Chennai, from Tiruchi due to a large workforce from this region in the IT companies there.

As the Vriddachalam-Salem BG line has been thrown open for traffic, the railways must introduce an intercity day express between Bangalore and Tiruchi through Vriddachalam and Salem with travel time of 8 hours both ways. One is sure the passenger patronage will be beyond the railways’ expectations.

Alternatively, a night train through the erstwhile route of Erode, Salem, Jolarpet and Bangarpet can also be considered.

Inconvenience for devotees

The whole of Srirangam has been transformed into a high-profile security fortress for Vaikunda Ekadasi. As this coincides with the Sabarimala season, Ayyappa devotees also throng the temple.

Buses and vans should not be allowed to be parked in a haphazard manner in the narrow Ammamandapam Road.

More temporary toilets should be constructed to prevent tourists from defecation in the public.

In the open verandah after the Ranga Ranga Gopuram, there are a few shops leased by the temple authorities. These shops display their wares by fully encroaching the open space, affecting free movement of devotees to Aryabhattal and Nazhikottan Vasal.

This is very much true of the two metal ware shops (located on both sides of Nadha Munigal Sannidhi and Opposite Thondaradipodiyalvar Sannidhi) and their canvassing agents within the temple who stand right in the middle of the pathway.

The temple authorities and the police must ensure that all the shops do business only within the space allotted to them.

The vehicular traffic from Rajagopuram to Ranga Ranga Gopuram should be totally banned during the entire Pagalpathu and Rappatthu days.

The shops on the main road should also be not allowed to encroach pavements.

Devotees from various parts of the country always wait for hours in the dharmadarshan and paid ticket lines.

However a few people manage to jump the queue and have a quick darshan. The temple authorities must avoid ‘VIP darshan’ to ensure equality of all citizens before Lord Ranganatha.

Stray dog menace

Despite repeated requests from the public, the Corporation has not done anything to catch stray dogs in Pushpak Nagar.

Pushpak Nagar has become unsafe for women, children and old people because of the dog menace.

I urge the authorities to take effective steps to remove stray dogs from Pushpak Nagar.

A. S. Krishnan,

Srirangam
