BJP takes Bellary Legislative Council seat

BELLARY: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won the Legislative Council elections from the Bellary Local Authorities Constituency, defeating the Congress.

After the counting of votes, Deputy Commissioner B. Shivappa declared Mrutyunjaya Jinaga of the party elected. Mr. Jinaga defeated Congress candidate Venkatarao Ghorpade, the former zilla panchayat president and brother of senior Congressman M.Y. Ghorpade, by a margin of 900 votes.

Mr. Jinaga polled 2,507 votes of the total 4,233 valid votes, while Mr. Ghorpade secured 1,607.

Although counting began on time at the Saraladevi Government First Grade College here, results were slow to trickle in. The results were announced at 2 p.m.

Mr. Jinaga attributed his victory to the efforts of his party workers and leaders.
