Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV’s portrait by M.N. Murthy. Mysore: Ramsons Kala Pratishtana and Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) will hold an exhibition of paintings from Wednesday. Paintings of eminent artists of Mysore who lived between 1840 and 2009 have been collected from various art collectors and they will be displayed for the benefit of the public. In all, 115 works of nearly 60 artists will be exhibited till January 3, 2010 and the style ranges from traditional Mysore to portraits, landscapes, line drawings, pencil sketches, embroidery and oil pastels. The exhibition titled “Mysore Masters” is a tribute to the great artists of the region and to rekindle memories of their contribution to the world of art. Everything including art forms, cuisine, fashion jewellery etc were greatly influenced by the palace and over the years they evolved and acquired a distinctly Mysore character. The descendants of chitragars, who migrated from Vijayanagar, blended the aesthetic temperament of Mysore into their traditional art school giving birth to the Mysore School of Painting. Tracing the evolution of the Mysore style, it was pointed out that there was British influence on it in the 19th century and later the presence of Raja Ravi Varma in Mysore changed the art scene in Mysore for good. “Master artists of bygone era have enriched the cultural landscape of Mysore with their creations and while these artists are no longer amidst us, their art work too is rare to find and have almost disappeared from public eye. Many of these are tucked away in collections while others hang cosily on the walls of government offices, guesthouses or museums. Hence, Ramsons Kala Pratishtana has assembled artworks from private collections and procured them from the family members of the artists and displayed them in association with INTACH, Mysore Chapter”, according to the organisers. The exhibition will be inaugurated today at Ramson’s Pratima Art Gallery (opposite the zoo) by Sri Shivaratri Deshikendra Swamiji of Suttur Math at 5 p.m. The exhibition will be open to public from December 24 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
