Plea to frame convention on copyrights

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Copyright Table organised in connection with the Thiruvananthapuram Book Fair has requested the Union government to frame an Indian convention on copyrights in place of the international agreement now followed in the country though unsuitable for its publishing scene.

The table, organised in association with the Frankfurt Book Fair, opined that although India had signed the Berne Convention on copyright protection, most of its terms could not be implemented in the country.

More than 20 publishers from across the country participated in the three-day table, which included a seminar on “Copyright sales and international book fairs.”

On Tuesday, Kabitha Dhara, editor and critic, spoke on “Australian publishing industry and copyright trade.” Akshay Pathak, director of the German Book Office, New Delhi, spoke on “German publishing and children’s literature.”

Ravi DC, chief executive officer of DC Books said e-books signalled the future of reading.

DC Books would soon launch an e-book reader.
