Symposium on bio-computing at NIT-C

Staff Reporter

Experts from 14 countries to take part in workshop

Symposium to be held from February 14 to 17

Registration for workshop opens

Kozhikode: The National Institute of Technology-Calicut (NIT-C) is hosting an International Symposium on Bio-computing (ISB-2010) in February 2010. The event, jointly organised by NIT-C and Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis (IUPUI) USA, in association with the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the professional body of computer scientists and engineers across the globe, will be held at the Kadavu Resort, Kozhikode, from February 15 to 17.

According to K.A. Abdul Nazeer, one of the chairs of ISB, the international event is expected to have participants from 14 countries from different continents. Mr. Nazeer told The Hindu that apart from technical paper presentations in six different sessions, the symposium will feature invited lectures by bio-computing experts of international repute.

He said that the symposium was expected to bring together researchers, who are working in the areas of computer science, life science and statistics, to a synergic platform for exchanging their ideas and to promote collaborations towards the development of improved bioinformatics tools.

“This symposium is an outcome of the visit by a renowned scientist in the field of Bioinformatics Mathew Palakal (Director, Informatics Research Institute, School of Informatics and Associate Dean, Graduate Studies, Indiana University Purdue University, Indianapolis, USA) to the Department of Computer Science and Engineering of NIT-C in last March,” he said, adding that Prof. Palakal would also be the Program Chair of the Symposium.

According to the organisers, ISB 2010 is also expected to witness the initiation of multidisciplinary interactions which will blur the boundaries between different analytical procedures (in vivo, in vitro and in silico) and thus help to gain deeper understanding of macromolecular interactions which ultimately define any biological system.

It is also expected to be serving as a forum for emphasising the role of bioinformatics in revolutionising knowledge-based drug design, agriculture biotechnology and forensic DNA analysis besides many commercial applications. “A fruitful collaboration between computer scientists and life scientists will pave the way for more meaningful and efficient research in the area of bioinformatics, with the ultimate aim of improving the quality and comfort of human life,” said Mr. Nazeer.

Registration for the symposium is open. Details of registration and other procedures are available at the ISB 2010 website: http://www.isb2010.org. e-mail: contact.isb@gmail.com.
