Thrissur: About 35 children of Lalur observed a fast on Tuesday expressing solidarity with the Lalur Malineekarana Virudha Samara Samithy agitators, as the relay satyagraha organised by the samithy completed nine days.
The samithy has been protesting against the Thrissur Corporation’s alleged ineptitude in solving the garbage issue. Writer Madambu Kunjukuttan inaugurated the agitation of the children.
T.K. Vasu, chairman of the Lalur Malineekarana Virudha Samara Samithy, said that children were the worst affected by the environmental pollution at Lalur.
“The children in the area are victims of numerous epidemics brought by the tonnes of garbage. They often fail to attend school due to illness. By involving children in the agitation, we want to take the voice of our future generation, who are denied the rights to live a safe and dignified life, to the masses,” he said.
Mr. Vasu said the Samara Samithy would not allow to implement the engineered land filling project at Lalur.
