Health hazard: Stagnation of sewage on a street in Kamaraj Nagar, Salem. SALEM: People residing in Kamaraj Nagar, Ward 8, are facing serious health threat due to stagnation of sewage on the streets. Lack of proper drains in the area has led to the stagnation, posing health hazard to the residents. Being one of the important localities in the ward, Kamaraj Nagar has been facing problems owing to sewage stagnation for several months. StenchWith no relief in sight, people are forced to put up with unbearable stench and mosquito menace. During rains, large amount of sewage mixed with rainwater stagnates on the streets. People can be seen wading through knee-deep water during heavy rains, shopkeepers here point out. Residents have taken up the issue with authorities concerned several times but nothing has come through. “We have submitted petitions to the Corporation Commissioner and health officials explaining the gravity of the issue. We have been asking the councillor of this area to take steps for constructing a proper drainage system. But we are yet to receive a reply,” they said. The dumping of garbage on the sides of streets had aggravated the problem. Corporation sanitary workers rarely visit the area to carry out cleaning works. “We have asked the officials to send the collection vehicles at frequent intervals. But no fruitful efforts have been made so far,” residents said.
