‘Tank in colony constructed in August, but pipeline, borewell faulty’

HASSAN: Resident of Jayanagar, 2nd stage, led by the Sri Maruthi Kshemabhivrudhi Sangha, staged a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office here on Tuesday demanding drinking water for their colony.

The residents presented a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner stating that the colony was built about 10 years ago, and housed about 1,000 people living in around 300 houses. The colony was under the jurisdiction of the Haralahalli Gram Panchayat, and within Hassan city limits. Despite several appeals, the panchayat had not made any arrangements to provide drinking water, the memorandum stated.

Sangha general secretary Nagaraje Gowda said that about two years ago, Rs. 15 lakh was released under the Sujaladhara Yojana for the construction of an overhead tank in the colony. Residents were promised that the tank would provide drinking water for the residents of the colony. He claimed that work on the tank had been completed and it was inaugurated by H.S. Prakash, MLA, on August 2, 2009. However, residents are yet to be supplied water. Mr. Gowda claimed that on enquiry, the panchayat secretary had said that the borewell drilled under this scheme and the new pipeline were not functioning. The residents were promised water from alternative borewells, which have yet to be drilled.

Mr. Gowda urged the Deputy Commissioner to instruct zilla panchayat engineers to visit the colony and inspect the overhead tank and take remedial measures. Additional Deputy Commissioner Subbaraya Kamat, who received the representation, assured them that he would take action.
