“Indian scientists’ contribution to nation’s progress significant”

KUMBAKONAM: Indian scientists have contributed significantly for the development of the nation said M. Vijayan, Distinguished Biotechnology Research Professor, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and President, Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi here on Tuesday.

Inaugurating the International Conference on Number Theory and Mock Theta Function at Srinivasa Ramanujan Centre of Shanmugha Arts Science Technology and Research Academy (SASTRA) University here, Prof.Vijayan said that green revolution was one example for the contribution made by Indian scientists.

It is for the young scientists to revitalise the old spirit and take forward Indian science and technology, he said. At present fund is not a problem as Indian Government is providing a lot for science and technology research. But there is a need to bring a change in the whole education system in the country. The change is required in content and also in the structure of education system.

Bureaucracy is the next hurdle. Many old institutions known for their excellence now remain neglected because of the bureaucratic attitude.

Prof.Vijayan presented the SASTRA-Ramanujan Award 2009 to Kathrin Bringmann, University of Cologne, Germany, on the occasion. Krishnaswami Alladi, Department of Mathematics, University of Florida and Chairman of SASTRA-Ramanujan Award Committee read the citation.

It said that the award was given to Prof.Kathrin Bringmann for her outstanding research on modular forms and mock theta functions on her own and in collaboration with several mathematicians. She has done spectacular work in an area that is most closely associated with Ramanujan, namely the mock theta functions.

R. Sethuraman, Vice-Chancellor of SASTRA University and S. Swaminathan, Dean (sponsored research) and Director, Centre for Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials, participated.
